TAMUC-MTNA
Collegiate Chapter
The TAMUC-MTNA Collegiate Chapter takes an active role in both the music department and local community. Our chapter’s goal is to provide each member with professional opportunities and leadership skills in the music field. We strive to create a positive impact and enhance the value of music making to society.
What we do
The MTNA Chapter shows their dedication in serving the campus and local community by funding the TAMUC Piano Academy Scholarship, contributing to the Sara Angier Endowment Fund, hosting receptions for concerts, sharing music at the Oak Manor nursing home, nurturing children’s musical abilities at the Commerce Public Library, and more.

Carlisle Mott
President
"The MTNA Chapter allows me to pursue leadership roles like being the president, and it allows me to work on projects with the other members. I was able to travel to national conventions and present at the MTNA Collegiate Chapters Symposium."
Cara Chrisman
Vice-president
"I have had the privilege of being a member of the MTNA Collegiate Chapter for over five years. During this time, I have enjoyed serving as the Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. One of my favorite aspects of MTNA are the exceptional opportunities available such as community service, personal development, and a chance to travel."
Shelbie Moore
Treasurer
"One of the things I love about being a member of MTNA is having the chance to build connections with other student piano teachers and an experienced advisor. I’m excited to have the opportunity to be a board member of a collegiate chapter, attend and present at conferences and symposiums, and take advantage of all the personal and professional benefits that come with MTNA membership."
Momoko Hoffman
Secretary
"The MTNA chapter has provided me with great experience in the music field, including opportunities to present at national conventions and creating connections/relationships within the piano community. As secretary, I have learned how to keep formal records of the chapter’s process and decisions."
Event Highlights
"Caging the Freed Bird"
Group presentation
Every year our collegiate chapter attends both MTNA national and state conferences. Many of our members have experience in preparing conference and poster presentations. Recently, we presented a group presentation “Caging the Freed Bird” at the 2020 MTNA Collegiate Chapter Symposium at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.
Oak Manor Nursing Home Keyboard Donation
One way the chapter serves the local community is by visiting the local Oak Manor nursing home twice a semester on a weeknight. In the spring of 2017 we were awarded the MTNA Collegiate Project Grant and purchased a Yamaha YDP-143 to give to the Oak Manor nursing home.

PIANO FUN DAYS & FESTIVALS
Members of the TAMUC-MTNA chapter volunteer to help the local HMTA chapter with piano fun days and festivals where they gain valuable experience teaching and guiding children in music-making activities and games.
conference
presentations
Members of the TAMUC-MTNA Collegiate Chapter have represented the university as a group and individually at conferences, in both poster sessions and collegiate presentations. In addition, members have the opportunity to attend the MTNA national conference every year through their fundraisers and university assistance.
Library events
Library events provide a positive experience for both MTNA members and children in the local community. Typical activities include music related crafts, story-telling, music & movement activities, and sing-alongs. MTNA members gain experience creating themed programs and leading a classroom-like setting. The children are provided with entertaining musical topics and activities.
Oak Manor
Nursing home
visits
MTNA members volunteer to play piano and sing hymns to the residents of the Oak Manor nursing home. The nursing home provides an opportunity for the members to work together as a team. We play pieces from our repertoire, fun duets, and pieces the residents might know (jazz, Broadway tunes, or other pop tunes.) Some of our members take voice lessons so we also typically sing pieces from the vocal repertoire or from the hymnal.
piano academy
scholarship
Each semester the chapter gives a $250 scholarship to the Piano Academy which allows one student in the academy who demonstrates financial need the ability
to take a semester of piano lessons at no cost.
Tamuc Soac

Every year, the TAMUC-MTNA Collegiate submits nominations for student organization awards through the univeristy. Members have received the William Leonidas Mayo Student Leader Award, Distinguished Graduate Student Leader Award, Unsung Hero Award, and the Student Organization Advisor of the Year Award.

During the summer of 2015 one of our members passed away from a tragic horse riding accident. In her memory, the music department created the Sara Angier Endowment. Our MTNA chapter currently gives money to the endowment each semester. The amount of money that the chapter gives varies each semester.
